Abhidhamma - The Fourteen Sinful Mental Factors (Part V) - Lesson 29
Macchariya (Rapacity)
Rapacity not bear a thing own to other person which is belong to someone, not bear others get the importance of a thing own to someone, not bear a binnes own to other which is same as someone have, not bear others seeing someone's binnes. A hard rapacity not even bear others taking something which is previously owned and abandoned. Someone not even bear giving someone's thing to others. They contemn those who giving.

There are five types of rapacity in the doctrine. Those are awasamacchariya, kulamacchariya, labamacchariya, wannamacchariya and dhammamacchariya

Awasamacchariya is the rapacity about the residence. Some Bhikkhus do not like coming to stay of the other virtuous Bhikkhus in his temple called awasamacchariya. But if the bhikku coming to stay is not virtuous, the rejecting is not awasamacchariya. Lay people own their houses and rejecting of coming other people to their homes is also not awasamacchariya. But if the person who come to stay has some ownership to that house, not letting him to come is awasamacchariya.

If someone or some bhikku could not bear a coming of other person or bhikku to his related house or contributing house is kulamacchariya. But if the coming bhikku is misleading lay people or destroy the virtue of the lay people it is not. Kulamacchariya is not bearing the coming of virtuous bhikku.

Labamacchariya means, not bearing the receiving of alms to other Bhikkhus. Some Bhikkhus ruin the things donated by the contributors on mal-use. Some Bhikkhus do not use the donations or do not give others and let those to ruin. Seeing of more donations that kind of Bhikkhus receive, willing of other virtuous Bhikkhu to receive is not labamacchariya.

The colour/brightness/beauty is in two types. One is body color. Other is colour of the quality/virtue. Macchariya can be generated on both of the above. The reluctance of other people getting more brighter skin than someone is called Wannamacchariya. He does not like to talk about other people's beauty. The person with Gunawarna macchariya does not like to talk about or hear about other's virtues or qualities.

Dhamma is also divided into two types. Those are Pativeda Dhamma and Paryapti Dhamma. Pativeda Dhamma are the path and fruitition to Nibbana. Noble persons have those and there is no any rapacity on that kind of Dhamma among them. They like very much of other people also getting those. Dhamma macchariya is only on the Paryapti Dhamma. People with Dhamma macchariya do not like to describe the rare Dhamma points which they got, to other people. When describing those to others they normally hide some points. They says they have hidden Dhamma points. When seeing someone try to learn Dhamma they draw them back by saying difficulties of understanding those Dhamma points or turn them to other way. But there are people who not good for teach by. Those people try to learn Dhamma to insulting. Not giving Dhamma to such people is not Dhamma macchariya.
